If the ANIOMA's are not Igbos, how come they speak Igbo? -THE NEGATIVE ROLE OF THE CHURCH IN THE ANIOMA IDEN-

That the Aniomas speak much of Igbo language has its root on the invasion of the church in the area.
I have often been confronted with questions such as: If the Aniomas are not Igbos, how come they speak Igbo? This got me into some research and I discovered that the Aniomas are conglomeration of different people groups, call it tribes if you may, which consists of Binis, Igalas, Igbos, Ishans, Urhobos, Isokos, Ijaws and Yorubas. These people have their various languages and dialects mixed up with little Igbo due to proximity to the East and the constant influx of the East into the Aniomaland till date. (Most of our farmlands are occupied by the Igbos in form of camps. Many have been there for ages). As the people mix up through inter marriages, the original dialects of the people were compromised. Then the church came with the early missionaries by the way of the River Niger, and Anioma was home to them.

Both the Aniomas and all of the East have different dialects based on their migration. The church then instituted the "Central Igbo Language Bible" which cuts across the barriers except for most of the Aniomas whose primary language or first language were not Igbo.
As the missionaries plants churches and CMS or Catholic schools, they began to teach the Aniomas Igbo language for effective communication and understanding of the bible. At the church schools, they were taught ABCD as A, Bi, Gbi, Di. Then, they introduced the pastorship exchange program whereby converts from Anioma were sent to the East to pastor vice versa which got worse with the Pentecostal movement championed by the Igbos of the era who had fervently embraced Christianity. The Igbo gospel hits were all over the airwave with gospel artists like Harcourt White, Voice of the Cross, Voice of Salvation etc. By so doing, the Aniomas continued to loose their language and dialects singing Igbo songs and reading the Igbo bible under an Igbo pastor.

A few days ago, I listened to a supposed Anioma song by an Issele Uku man with utmost dismay. While this music was played with the Anioma "apele or otulaka" the wordings were devoid of Anioma, Issele Uku dialect. It was more of Igbo accents than Anioma. That actually gave birth to this article as I cried for my people.

I fear an extinction of our dialects in the very near future. The core Anioma languages are fast evaporating. I continue to find myself use some unconscious, random words I heard my grandparents speak that this current generation don't know about. This is puzzling.

Anioma is gradually migrating into the generation X kings (Obi's) who knows little or nothing about our language, culture or history. Some of them reside overseas. This further poses a threat to the Anioma. I therefore with due respect plead with all the Anioma kings to hold on to our God given culture, tradition, and language. Address your people in your dialects and not in English. Uphold our Anioma values. It is a gift from God.

Finally, diokpa Ebigwei viral interview lacks credibility. Ahaba Ujum is not from the east but from Igala. And majority of Anioma people are from Benin and Igala predominantly. It's sad that someone will sell off his people for little naira from the east all in the quest for Biafra. This Biafra agenda is now using our people against us. Very typical, clever politics. Anioma people are NOT Biafrans and will never be. We are not appendage to any other ethnic group. Thanks to Omu Martha Dunkwu for making that clear.

I remain yours for United Anioma nation.

  1. I don't believe in this. How can you say that a people can forget about their culture and language and start speaking the language of foreigners? How possible can that be? As we all speak English, have we forgotten our languages? This is a ploy by Nigeria and the British to device the Igbo nation. Turning brothers against themselves. If this is true, why are the core Benin people discriminating against the small Igbo community in Edo state? Igbo's migrated to Lagos, have yorubas adopted Igbo as language? Let's be reasonable. Don't go against your brother. However, despite all the discrimination, the Igbo's are still the most successful. The Igbo states has the lowest unemployment rate in Nigeria not because of government presence but by the strength, brain and determination God has given them. Igbo state is still regarded as China and Japan of Africa, a tittle that not even Lagos can boast of. So we can see who needs who. I am not a fan of Biafra but saying you are not Biafra is out of it. Of course Delta and PH is part of original Biafra. Who will you go with? Your Igbo brothers or a total stranger ? The choice is yours. Keep denying your brothers.

    1. Understand what the writer said. ANIOMA had her own dialects. The Christianity that was introduced made igbo become the Anioma main language

  2. Why did Emma Okocha and SUNDEY OLISEH and others say they are igbo If this is the case? Looking at the picture above, all I see is Igbo tradition.

  3. Everyone has dialects. Including Enugu, Anambra and co. I still don't believe in that. I don't see how possible it can be. The white man came to Nigeria, have that stopped us from speaking our Dialect? Let's be reasonable, there is no how that can happen. Didn't the church go to the west and other part of the country, where else have that happened? Let's stop all this as it is a ploy to separate brothers for the selfish interest of Britain and Nigeria. No one forgets his/her root no mater what.As an Igbo,i can understand Asaba man when he speaks but I can't understand Abakiliki man so what are we saying here? Let's be careful. You guys are coming up with all this because Biafra Lost the war. So that you will Aline yourselves with other part of the country. Let me remind you, you will remain minority to those people. They can never be your brothers. You have absolutely nothing in common with them. Remember, Fulani can't love you more neither will Yoruba. If they create a fake history to justify leaving your brothers. The choice is yours. Remember, it will never make them better than an average Igbo man. Igbo man will always stand out despite the marginalization. They rule Nigeria but 70% of their people are living in abject poverty. The suppressed Igbo's have highest number of comfortable Nigerians. Can't you feel the hand work of our creator? Let's be wise.
