ERHIATAKE IBORI-SUENU’S FORMAL DEFECTION: A SHAMELESS DANCE OF UNGRATEFULNESS
Earlier Tuesday, Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, publicly announced her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before a group of people in Oghara, Ethiope West LGA of Delta State.
What she thought could have been a significant political move for her has already lost its luster. Her defection, which she hoped would generate attention, didn’t get any significant attention.
As a matter of fact, the supposed leader of the Delta APC, holding the highest political position from the state wasn’t even on ground to receive her alongside other notable leaders of the party which signifies that her defection was not even a welcome one on the other side.
In her earlier statement dripping with half-hearted emotion, she claimed her resignation was “foisted on me by my complete exclusion by the state chapter of the party”. Yet, this is the same PDP that handed her a ticket to the National Assembly in 2023, despite her glaring unpopularity.
Her grievances are hollow, revealing a politician unwilling to acknowledge the goodwill and benevolence that has sustained her over the years.
This defection is hardly shocking; Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu owes her political career to the goodwill of her father and the PDP’s respect for his legacy. For years, she has been surviving on her father’s political legacy and respect the party accorded him as a former Governor, which has now come to an end following her misguided and ungrateful move.
The PDP even worked tirelessly to ensure her victory in the 2023 elections, only for her to align openly with the opposition before now. Her betrayal was glaring, but the PDP triumphed nonetheless, delivering a landslide victory in Delta State governorship election, including in her constituency.
Her inability to sway even her local electorate shows her dwindling influence and disconnection from grassroots and from the very people.
Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s defection was accompanied by individuals largely motivated by personal gain, particularly securing federal patronage in the coming years.
Many of these individuals have little regard for the fragile factional APC structure in Delta State. A party with multiple national leaders and state party chairmen is where she decamped to, after claiming that the leadership crisis in PDP National contributed to her defection from the party. Very funny!
Their defection to the APC isn't driven by a desire to strengthen their party's chances in the 2027 governorship election or even in the interest of Hon. Ibori-Suenu.
In fact, most of them know that if the 2027 election were to take place tomorrow, the APC wouldn't even win a single LGA in Delta State. This is simply the time for opportunistic politicians to cash out.
They're moving early to position themselves to switch back to the PDP before the 2027 elections. Because, come 2027, it will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for the factional APC in Delta to secure victory in one LGA in Delta State.
However, for the PDP, these defections are a cleansing rather than a loss. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu’s departure is inconsequential. Her political relevance has long been in free fall, sustained only by her father’s legacy in the party and the party’s benevolence, which has come to an end. Her inability to add value or influence outcomes, even in her own constituency, renders her exit insignificant.
As for the factional Delta APC that welcomed her today, they may have welcomed her and the others with open arms, but what do they bring? No substantial political capital. No grassroots support. Just the baggage of opportunism.
The PDP in Delta State remains resilient, united, and focused on its mission. The recent departure of the few serves only to strengthen its foundation.
PDP in Delta State understands that its strength lies not in individuals who seek personal gain, but in the collective resolve of its loyal members and large supporters.
The PDP in Delta State remains strong, United and more determined than ever to maintain its dominance in Delta state. The PDP led administration will remain focused only on governance, development and the transformation of the state, ensuring equitable development even to the good people of the state residing in Oghara and Orogun.
